What to Expect During Your First PAD Consultation in Bellflower | B&B Medical Group

What to Expect During Your First PAD Consultation in Bellflower | B&B Medical Group

Your First Visit: What to Know Before You Go

If your doctor has referred you for a PAD evaluation — or you’ve decided to get checked after noticing leg pain, non-healing wounds, or other symptoms — it’s natural to feel uncertain about what happens next. Knowing what to expect can make the experience much more comfortable.

At B&B Medical Group in Bellflower, we see PAD patients every day. Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough of a typical first consultation.

Before Your Appointment

When you call to schedule, our team will ask about your insurance information and the reason for your visit. If your primary care doctor or specialist referred you, we may already have some of your medical records. If not, it helps to bring a list of your current medications, any recent lab results or imaging, and a summary of your symptoms — including when they started and what makes them better or worse.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting pants or shorts, since the physician will need to examine your legs and feet.

The Initial Evaluation

Your consultation will typically begin with a conversation about your symptoms and medical history. The vascular specialist will ask about leg pain patterns, walking limitations, wound healing issues, and risk factors such as smoking history, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.

This conversation is important — it helps the physician understand not just your symptoms, but how PAD is affecting your daily life. Be open and specific. Mentioning that you can’t walk to the mailbox without stopping, for example, gives the doctor more useful information than simply saying “my legs hurt.”

The Physical Exam

The physician will examine your legs and feet, checking for pulse strength at various points, skin color and temperature, any wounds or sores, and signs of reduced blood flow such as hair loss or skin changes. This hands-on assessment takes just a few minutes and is painless.

Diagnostic Testing

The most common initial test for PAD is the ankle-brachial index (ABI). This quick, non-invasive test uses blood pressure cuffs on your arms and ankles to compare blood pressure readings. A lower reading in the ankle relative to the arm suggests reduced blood flow in the leg arteries.

Depending on the ABI results and your symptoms, additional testing may be recommended — such as an ultrasound to visualize blood flow through the arteries or, in some cases, an angiogram to get a detailed view of the blockages.

Discussing Your Options

After the evaluation, your vascular specialist will explain the findings and discuss a treatment plan. For mild PAD, this might include lifestyle modifications such as a supervised walking program, smoking cessation support, and medication management. For more advanced disease, minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty or stenting may be recommended.

At B&B Medical Group, all interventional procedures are performed as outpatient procedures right in our Bellflower surgical center — meaning no hospital stay. Most patients go home the same day.

Questions You Might Want to Ask

There are no wrong questions during your consultation. That said, some helpful ones to consider include: What stage is my PAD? What treatment options are available to me? How quickly should I consider treatment? What lifestyle changes will make the biggest difference? Will my insurance cover the recommended procedures?

Our clinical team is here to answer every question and make sure you leave the consultation with a clear understanding of your condition and next steps.
